![]() You're really only making half the motion - jerking the remote to the side to swing – and it feels nothing like swinging a golf club in real life. ![]() Since you release the button on the back stroke, you never feel like you're actually performing the swing. The larger and faster the motion, the more the power bar is filled. Release the A button, and your character follows through with the swing. To hit the ball, you hold the A button and swing the remote, which briefly fills up the power bar. You move and aim your character using the D pad, and hit the ball with a gesture of the Wii remote, which is reflected by a power meter on the bottom of the screen. On to the most important part of any Wii game the controls. There's not much to this mode, but as always, even the worst games are more fun when you play with a friend. You can also wager items you've acquired to add a bit of competition. In this mode, a score is carried throughout. You then choose the stages you'd like to play. In multiplayer mode, you and up to three friends can choose to play a three, six, or nine hole game. The entire experience is watered down to one hole at a time. Once you finish a hole, you'll be given the option to play again, or to go back to the map and choose another. You never get the feeling you're playing against a real person. On one occasion I watched Barker make the same shot into a pool of lava five times in a row, followed by multiple hole in one putts. The computer controlled character seems to choose randomly between predetermined shots. Once someone makes it in the hole, the match ends. If you play against Barker you have the added goal of finishing in fewer shots to get a special coin. You can collect coins used to buy accessories and items for your character, or go for par and collect a puzzle piece that can unlock special clubs. If you play alone, you pick one hole and play through. ![]() In single player you can choose to go solo, or play against Barker. Is this how Tiger Woods got started? Barker will quickly introduce you to the standard single player and multiplayer modes. You can save your character to the Wii remote to use on another Wii, but with characters so generic, why bother? Unlockable accessories are used as rewards while playing, but there's really no reason to care. The appearance of your chosen golfer can't be customized enough to make it necessary. Character creation is, for the most part, pointless. Immediately upon starting a new game, you'll be taken to a character creation screen. This game is meant for casual gamers, but even they will find Barker's constant commentary a little too much to take. He'll introduce every hole, every course, every menu, and every option. Throughout the experience he's going to explain every aspect of the game to you. Barker is probably one of the most unintentionally irritating characters ever to grace a video game. When you arrive at the main menu, you'll be greeted by Barker, the Carnival Games mascot.
